The Crystal Stair Series, named for Langston Hughes’ iconic poem, “Mother to Son,” is an ongoing initiative that provides a platform for mothers to tell the world about their beautiful, complicated black and brown sons. In the wake of the George Zimmerman trial verdict two weeks ago, one of our wonderful community members, Damali Robertson presented this idea to us. She felt it was imperative that we try to impress the beauty, the nuances, and the humanity of our sons upon a world that seems not to understand us or our children as fully human and greatly valued. We agree — and we’d like to share as many (single and married) mothers’ videos to, with, and for their minority sons as possible.
Jamie Nesbitt Golden is our first featured mother. In this witty, candid, and thoughtful video to her three-year-old, she shares her joy and admiration of him, as well as her fears about the Post-Trayvon world in which he will grow up. We are deeply moved and overwhelmed with pride to present: Jamie to Son.
Jamie is a recovering journalist who co-hosts Nerdgasm Noire Network, a weekly podcast. She lives in Chicago, Illinois.
